One day when I was helping my grandmother move old furniture out of her home, she said, “Sky, you have a gift.” The phrase gave me a smile – a gift. I’d never naturally had something in me that was good – I always thought I never had any talent in anything really. All my life, I wondered how people became who they were. How does a milkmaid become a milkmaid? How does a postman become a postman? Were these callings or simply jobs? Would I have a calling? My grandmother said to me softly, “You’ve been blessed with incredible strength, my boy. Never forget to use it to help your family as you’ve helped me.” I kept my grandmother’s promise when I was permitted to step into the United States. As I boarded the airplane, walking behind the luggage and carry-ons of other passengers that walked with me into a foreign land, I thought about my mother, grandmother and baby brother. Although they were happy for me, I was sure they were crying tears of joy, but sadness at the same time. I cried on the plane as it bounced through the air. I looked out the window and saw the massive ocean. I never realized how big the world was, how small I was in comparison to it all until I looked out the window of that plane. It frightened me, but at the same time excited every part of me. I thought of my mother on the pier beside my grandmother – she had a look of worry in her eye, but I don’t think it was for me. I felt the power of my family behind me, like a mountain surging from the ground and raising me to the sun’s rays. I was completely determined to succeed and no one was going to stop me. When I arrived to America, I learned English and attended school religiously. I was so fascinated with almost every subject that I actually forgot about the sadness brought on for leaving most of my family and actually felt happy for once. I remember looking out the window one evening after a long night of studying and hoping that my mother, baby brother, and grandmother were all looking at the same moon. We talked about it often before I left – that we would all promise to look at the moon every night at the same time so that we were all together in some way. I thought about the wisdom my grandmother taught me often – the resilience of my strength and the power it gave me. I was able to get my first job in America by working at a fast food restaurant. Although I was initially excited that I was able to get a job in an English-speaking country, I soon realized that the environment wasn’t for me. I left that restaurant and started working for a moving company as a lifter. On my first day, I had to move an old woman out of her small apartment with my co-worker named Jeff. We were upstairs in the old woman’s dusty bedroom when Jeff asked me if I could help him with a large loveseat. “No worries,” I told him. “I can get it. You grab something else.” I lifted the entire loveseat by myself and began walking out of the bedroom, Jeff silent. When I got to the bottom of the stairs, I heard the old woman call out to me. “My, my, what strength for a young man!” she shouted, clapping and smiling. I looked at her strangely and then solemnly. She reminded me of my grandmother – what she said to me. It was at that point that I knew I was going to take my grandmother’s advice to heart instead of literally. All my life, stories have shaped the way that I think and live. There is an old saying in Haiti: Piti, piti, wazo fe nichli. It means ‘little by little, the bird builds its nest.’ My grandmother used to tell me this constantly and only in America did it make complete sense. Only in America was I able to build my nest little by little over time. If my family were to see how I was thinking at that moment, I knew they’d be proud. As I continued to save and work for the moving company that hired me, learning all of their procedures, how much they paid their employees, how much they charged per move, but most importantly, I loved what I was doing. All of my employees were amazed at how many things that I could carry to the point they began placing bets on whether I could lift as much as I said I could. Needless to say, I became a bit of a legend throughout the company, which made it all the more obvious that I needed my own moving business. Over time, I was able to assist my family in getting to America with the money my father and I saved. My mother became a full American citizen and she was able to bring my grandmother as well as my baby brother. I remember hugging my grandmother for so long when she arrived, and I whispered into her ear, “Thank you so much for everything.” She began crying, as did I because she knew exactly what I was talking about. I love my father and I love my mother as well, but my grandmother was the only one in my life that ever bothered to give me motivation and hope. I told my grandmother and the rest of my family about my plans to open a moving service and they were all very supportive. My grandmother immediately loved the idea, as did my parents, especially when I explained the significance of the business for our family. It wasn’t long after I began plans on my new ideas that my grandmother fell gravely sick, so sick that she had to go back to Haiti to be taken care of. I cried when she left and we hugged for a very long time, but I knew that she would always be in my heart. “Get better,” I told her. “Get better so you can see me do amazing things.” I waved to her as she boarded the plane, wondering when I’d see her next. Part of me was afraid that my business would fail, but it wasn’t nearly as fearful as I was about my grandmother’s health. One day when I was working at my desk, crunching some numbers for the business, I got a phone call from my mother. She was weeping on the phone, barely able to breathe. “Your grandmother is dying,” she suddenly blurted. I dropped my phone and looked out the window, looking up at the same moon that I always hoped my family was looking at. I started crying, knowing my grandmother could only see it a certain number of times. I picked up the phone and tried to compose myself. “I’m coming back,” I said to my mother. “I’m coming back to take care of her.” My mother immediately started to disagree, telling me to stop talking that way. “There’s nothing you can do,” she told me as we cried together. “This is just a fact of life, Sky. Stay there and do what your grandmother would want.” “Put her on the phone,” I said. “I want to hear her on the phone – put her on now!” She told me to calm down and said that she couldn’t, that grandma was too sick and too tired to speak. I started crying and looked out at the window, at the sky. I wondered why my mother named me Sky, but I didn’t ask. Instead I told her that I had to go because I was very busy. I worked as hard as I’d ever worked that night, essentially planning the entire business plan. I had everything except the name of the business. I knew I had something golden and that I had to make my grandmother proud. I looked at the moon at the planned time and I felt warm inside me knowing that my mother and grandmother were looking at the same thing. A week passed and I got another phone call from my mother in the early morning. The sun was beaming through my room. “Sky,” her voice said. It was my grandmother and she sounded as healthy as she’d ever sounded. “Grandma?” I asked, and she told me she started laughing that laugh. “The doctors say I’m going to be okay,” she told me. “At least for as long as God allows. Don’t worry, my boy.” I felt a surge of energy go through my veins. It came from the voice of my grandmother and I knew that if she could survive with such a miracle, so could I. “I want you to open your business soon,” she said cheerily. “And I want you to name it Legend Movers 4 You.” The idea was hers, it always was. I started the business and it became very successful – as a thank you, I got my grandmother a goat and returned to Haiti. We had a nice visit and I promised her more gifts to come, but unfortunately that was the last time I spoke to her. I feel fortunate that she got to see me start my dream, but sad that she had to go so soon. I continue my moving service in her honor, not only as a mission for myself, but my family as well. As a final wish, she wrote in a note that she wanted me to carry her casket, which I sadly did at her funeral in Haiti.
